The Ladin people of the Dolomites<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you arrive in Val di Fassa you can really be amazed! The Dolomites are a unique sight in the world: forests and beautiful pastures, welcoming and full of traditions villages ready to be discovered, mountains that seem to take fire at dawn and dusk, when the sun sets … In the valley, objects, traditions and echos of a lively and fascinating culture are still preserved: the culture of the Ladins of Val di Fassa, a community with its own ancient customs and traditions and its own language: the Ladin. To discover the ancient origins of this culture and the Ladin language we have to take a step back in time to about 2000 years ago. Ladin is a “Romanic” language that is derived from the Latin (just like the Italian, French or Spanish) who arrived in the valleys of the Dolomites at the end of the first century B.C., when the Roman army conquered the Alps. At that time – and it would have been for many centuries to come – thanks to the military successes of Rome, Latin was becoming a very important language for trade, politics, travelling… In short, it was a kind of English of the time! Of course, the language spoken by the merchants and Roman soldiers who came to the Dolomites was not the language used by the great Latin writers. More than the “classic” Latin, it was quite a “vulgar” Latin, the one spoken by the common people (in Latin \u201cvolgo\u201d) which in contact with the local dialects turned into a new language: Ladin. Probably the Ladin area was in these early centuries really extensive: from the Danube to the Garda Lake, to the Adriatic coast. But with the barbarian invasions and the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century A.D., this cultural unity was broken, and the language and culture of the Ladin remained confined in some area. Nowadays Ladin is spoken in three areas: in the canton of Grisons, Switzerland, where since 1938 is considered the fourth national language; in the Ladin Dolomites, an area that extends from the Ampezzo valley to the mountain group of Sella, and includes Val Gardena, Val Badia, Livinallongo and Val di Fassa; in Friuli, which is the easternmost and largest of these areas. The Ladin spoken in these places, however, is not always the same; these areas remained for long time isolated and developed different “varieties” of Ladin which, while remaining similar, have great differences today. In Switzerland there are six different varieties and even in the Ladin Dolomites, each valley has its own. In Val Badia there is the \u201cbadiotto\u201d, in Val Gardena the \u201cgardenese\u201d, in Livinallongo the \u201clivinallese\u201d, in Ampezzo the \u201campezzano\u201d and in Val di Fassa the \u201cfassano\u201d. Ladin in Val di Fassa is divided into three local variants: the moen\u00e0t (Moena), the brach (in the central part of the valley, from Soraga to Mazzin) and the caz\u00e9t (in the upper part of the valley, up to Pen\u00eca). In its three variants, the fassano is a language that is used not only in everyday life, but also for the institutional documents, in schools, on the news, on the radio, in local magazines … So it is a “living” language, in constant change, able to meet the demands of modern life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ordering of the Autonomous Region Trentino – Alto Adige protects Ladin as the third language group, next to the German linguistic group and the Italian one, but also the national legislation includes the Ladin communities among the linguistic minorities recognized in accordance with the principles established by art. 3 of the Italian Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Ladin Dolomites, despite the administrative division, the linguistic consciousness and the feeling of identity are rooted and supported by a dense network of associations, which are accompanied in recent decades by the work of institutions and research centers<\/p>\n\n\n\n
